Artistic Impression – Hoarding Artwork Unveiling

Wherever building work takes place, the safety of our communities is our top priority. You will have seen the large wooden hoarding that surround sites that are put in place to keep pedestrians safe from the work taking place within. While predominantly for safety, they also provide a blank canvas for local people to display their artistic creations.
So when local schools and community groups were asked to contribute their art to the Church Street Site A hoarding, they jumped at the chance. The theme of the artwork was ‘what does Church Street mean to you?’ We put out an open call to schools and the local community to submit.
Children from the Gateway Academy and St Edwards Primary School alongside MBS Youth, Daniel Leon, Anjalee Salter and the Dende Collective all contributed to the project.
On Thursday 26 June, the schools and artists along with Church Street Regeneration project team, Cllrs Ormsby and Mount Anvil CEO Darrah Hurley attend an unveiling of community artwork on Broadley Street as part of Site A hoarding.
Thank you to all the of the community artwork project and a special thank you to one of our traders Anwar Tailors who helped with the big reveal.
Pop along and have a look at this fabulous communality art installation.

One of the first major projects in the Church Street Regeneration, the development of Sites A will bring new homes, shop space, facilities for the market and a place for the Church Street Library.
We listened carefully to the feedback the community gave us since 2019 and we carried out a two stage pre-planning application process in 2021. In 2022 we wanted all residents living in the regeneration areas named Site A,B & C to have their say on our regeneration proposal. We held a residents’ ballot from November 19 to December 21 2022 to make sure the community supported our plans. The result saw 56% of residents take part in the ballot and 73.1% voted ‘yes’.
Key Facts
The regeneration of Sites A will deliver 430 new homes. All current council homes will be re-provided, with secure tenants having the option to return to a new high-quality home that meets their needs, with rents set in the same way as they are now. 50% of the new homes will be affordable.
The regeneration of Sites A will also:
- Create new pedestrianised routes and high-quality green public spaces.
- Build new community facilities, including a new playground and library.
- Provide improved infrastructure for Church Street Market.
- Create new jobs, training opportunities, and shops for the local community.
- Introduce new cycle infrastructure, including cycle storage, enhanced cycling routes and 1,500 new cycle parking spaces, building on the council's Active Travel commitments .
Strategic timeline for Site A
- February 2024 Mount Anvil selected as joint venture partner.
- Summer 2024 start of demolition
- Start of construction 2026
- Practical Completion 2030

We’re now reading through all your feedback. A report will be published before August, and everyone who took part will get a summary – including details on how to help shape the design of Sites B and C.
