Investing in Church Street's Young People

Through the regeneration of Church Street, we’re harnessing this investment in the area to benefit every section of the community. With over 2,200 young people living in the ward, the Church Street Partnership Community fund is providing £90,000 to the Young Westminster Foundation (YWF) to deliver innovative projects.

The Joint Venture partnership with Mount Anvil and Westminster Council is delivering £1m of funding over the life of the project. Some of the projects receiving funding this year are:

Cayr Charity’s – NatureHood x Church Street will offer year-round environmental arts workshops, trips and outdoor activities shaped by young people

The Feathers Association’s –Empowering Young Minds Through Equal Opportunity project will combine a residential trip, upgraded music provision and a community summer event to build confidence, creativity, wellbeing and local connections.

Floating Classroom will provide eight low-cost, curriculum-linked canal learning trips for Church Street primary schools, bringing local history, geography, science and the environment to life.

Greenhouse Sports – A Safe Space to Belong will provide free, structured after-school activities and specialist table tennis coaching for ages five to 18 at The Greenhouse Centre.

Site A New Street Naming And Planting Follow-up Workshop

Thank you to everyone who took part and shared their ideas at the workshop held last month. Residents discussed ideas for which plants could be incorporated and how the new public spaces could reflect Church Street history and identity. The group also discussed ideas for what to name the new street at Site A.

The landscape architects have used the feedback from the workshop to update the designs and they would now like to share them with you.

We are holding a second workshop on Wednesday 4 November. It will take place at:

Lilestone Community Hub, Lilestone Street
NW8 8SU, 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

To reserve your place or find out more, please go to Register for the workshop here call 020 4646 3190 or come and see us at the Regeneration Space,
56 Church Street, London NW8 8ET.

You don’t need to have attended the first workshop to attend.

Introducing Charlottte

As part of our series showcasing Church Street businesses, we’re introducing Charlotte who specialises in creating and selling custom-made lamps.

How did your business get started?

After training as a costume maker, I decided to use a small left-over bit of fabric to make a lampshade for my flat and have been hooked ever since. I loved the craft of it and the huge impact such a small item can have on a room. Making lampshades was a hobby for many years and I always hoped to turn it into a business.

How did you hear about Lisson Grove Enterprise?

I rented my first Arbeit Studio for a few years I was ready for a bigger space. I jumped at the opportunity to apply for Lisson Grove. Being a stone’s throw away from Church Street and all the amazing antiques shops felt like the perfect location for me.
What has having a workspace at Lisson Grove Studios meant for your business?
Being here has given me the opportunity to grow and experiment with my work. It’s been incredible to have a place I can go every day and to have the space to play with new ideas and get orders out to customers.

How has the partnership between Westminster City Council, the Church Street Regeneration Programme and Arbeit Studios supported your business?

Affordable studio spaces are incredibly hard to find in the NW areas so having this space has been such a boost, having a huge window onto the street to showcase my work has been a dream come true.
The local small businesses have been incredibly welcoming and I can’t wait to get involved with future projects in the area.

You can find Charlotte at Studio 6, Lisson Grove Enterprise space, Lisson Grove, NW8 BFT

Helping Church Street Residents Report Local Issues

Residents who live in Church Street are best placed to report issues affecting their neighbourhood. This could be antisocial behaviour, fly-tipping and crime. Often it is difficult to know how to raise these issues with the Council. We’re working with local schools, community hubs and voluntary organisations to help residents report concerns more easily and confidently.

Throughout November, we’ll hold drop-in sessions in local schools and other familiar community venues. Staff will show residents how to choose the right service and submit a report. Residents can use their own mobile phone or a council iPad. They can ask questions and practise making a report, so they feel confident doing it themselves in future.

Why reporting local issues matters

The police deal with many reports and must decide which incidents need the most urgent response. Clear and accurate reports help them understand where problems are happening and where support is most needed.

However, from talking to residents, we know that not every incident of antisocial behaviour, crime, or fly-tipping is reported. This is a problem as reports from residents help the police and other organisations:

• Identify areas where problems happen regularly
• Understand repeated problems
• Decide where to focus their staff and resources

The sessions are open to everyone. You can attend if you’re reporting an issue for the first time or want to better understand the process. Drop in for step-by-step help and learn how to report future concerns on your own.

Three Little Pigs At The Cockpit Theatre

Building stories brought to life on stage at The Cockpit Theatre

A new play follows three construction workers through a day on site. Their story runs alongside that of Mummy Pig and her three sons. It explores how an absent father continues to shape their family.

The production uses writing, physical theatre, visual storytelling and humour. It explores craft, pride, migration, family separation, financial pressure, mental wellbeing, identity, belonging and the meaning of home.

Although entirely fictional, the play is inspired by writer Inna Cebotari’s family’s experience of the construction industry and more than 100 conversations with people connected to construction sites across the UK.

Performances at The Cockpit:

• Thursday 12 November, 7.30pm
• Friday 13 November, 7.30pm
• Saturday 14 November, 3pm & 7.30pm
